How to mail a physical letter with USPS from your computer without buying stamps or envelopes
USPS delivers physical letters, but USPS's normal letter workflow still assumes a prepared envelope with postage. If you want to send a letter from your computer without buying stamps, envelopes, paper, or ink, use an online print-and-mail service that prepares the mailpiece and hands it to USPS.

Key takeaways
- USPS letter mailing normally requires an envelope, address, and postage.
- Click-N-Ship is useful for packages and some larger envelopes, but it is not the same as a consumer upload-print-mail letter service.
- A print-and-mail service handles printing, envelope prep, postage, and USPS handoff.
- PostalForm lets you upload a PDF or write a letter online, then mails the physical letter through USPS.
- Certified Mail and Express solve different problems: proof versus speed.
What USPS does directly
For ordinary letters, USPS explains the traditional process: address the envelope, put the letter inside, add the right postage, and send it through a mailbox, collection box, or Post Office location. USPS also sells stamps online and at Post Office locations, kiosks, and many retailers.
USPS Click-N-Ship is different. It lets you buy and print postage for USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, and Priority Mail Express shipping labels. It is useful when you already have a package or qualifying envelope ready to ship, but it does not replace the whole "print my letter, put it in an envelope, stamp it, and mail it" job for ordinary consumer letters.
The no-stamps, no-envelopes workflow
- Write the letter on your computer - Use Google Docs, Word, Pages, or PostalForm's letter editor.
- Save or upload the document - Export to PDF, or write the letter directly online.
- Enter the recipient and return address - Use the full mailing address, including unit or suite details.
- Choose the USPS mailing option - First Class, Express, or Certified Mail when available.
- Approve and pay online - The service prints, envelopes, adds postage, and hands the letter to USPS.
You still get a real physical letter delivered by USPS. The difference is that you did not prepare the physical mailpiece yourself.
When to use each option
| Need | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Cheapest ordinary letter | First Class |
| Faster delivery | Express |
| Proof of mailing and delivery | Certified Mail |
| No PDF yet | Write a letter online |
| Existing signed PDF | Upload the PDF |
| Many recipients | Bulk mail campaign |
What you do not need
You do not need:
- a home printer
- printer ink
- printer paper
- envelopes
- stamps
- a postage scale
- a post office trip
You do need a final letter, the recipient address, a return address, and a way to pay online.
Can I do this entirely through USPS.com?
For ordinary letters, usually no. USPS.com is excellent for buying stamps, looking up rates, and creating some online shipping labels, but the normal letter instructions still center on a physical envelope and postage.
If your goal is "I have text or a PDF on my computer and want someone to print, envelope, stamp, and mail it," use a print-and-mail service. USPS still delivers the letter after handoff.
Proof and tracking
Regular First Class letters generally do not include end-to-end tracking. If you need a record, choose Certified Mail. USPS describes Certified Mail as an add-on that provides proof you mailed the item and that the recipient signed for it; Return Receipt can provide a printed or emailed delivery record with the recipient's signature.
For urgent mail, choose Express instead. Express is for speed. Certified Mail is for proof. If you need both speed and a signature, review the available options at checkout before sending.
