Do you need to contact all three bureaus?
Not automatically. Get your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com and compare them. Send a dispute only to each bureau whose report contains information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete.
If the error appears on all three reports, prepare three separately addressed disputes. Each bureau maintains its own file and instructions. One combined envelope cannot serve all three recipients.
Build each dispute separately
For every affected report:
- Identify the item exactly as that bureau displays it.
- Explain what is wrong and state the requested correction.
- Mark the relevant report page.
- Include copies of supporting records relevant to that bureau's entry.
- Follow the bureau's current identity and address requirements.
- Keep an exact copy and a separate mailing and response record.
Similar facts can be reused, but do not assume the company name, partial account number, dates, status, or report number is identical across reports.
Verify current official instructions
- Equifax dispute center
- Experian dispute center
- TransUnion mail-dispute instructions
- CFPB dispute instructions and sample letters
Confirm each mailing address and document requirement immediately before sending. Do not treat an old address copied from a template as current.
What about the company that reported the information?
The CFPB also describes disputes to the furnisher, such as a lender, servicer, or collector. A furnisher dispute is a separate communication. Use the designated dispute address shown on your report or in the company's current instructions.
Mailing proof
Certified Mail is optional for an ordinary credit-report dispute. If you choose it, each bureau mailing needs its own tracking number and proof record. Delivery evidence documents receipt; it does not guarantee a correction or deletion.
Identity theft
If an account resulted from identity theft, start with IdentityTheft.gov and follow each bureau's identity-theft instructions. Do not rely on a generic dispute letter alone.
