Form 1040 print kit
Can you mail Form 1040 online? Print it for hand signature
You can arrange Form 1040 printing online, but the final paper-filing steps must remain with the taxpayer. PostalForm prints a prepared Form 1040 packet and mails it to the taxpayer or authorized signer. That person reviews the physical pages, signs the paper by hand, adds any required physical enclosures, verifies the current IRS destination, and personally mails the final return.

How it works
Finish preparing Form 1040 — Use tax software or a qualified preparer to create the paper-filing copy.
Upload the print packet — Add the primary return PDF and any printable supporting documents in the order they should appear.
Enter the signer’s address — Choose where the taxpayer or authorized signer will receive the physical kit; do not enter the IRS address.
Review the print preview — Check page order, orientation, content, and readability.
Receive, sign, and assemble — The taxpayer hand-signs the paper and adds required physical enclosures.
Verify and mail to the IRS — The taxpayer confirms the current destination and performs the final mailing personally.
Fast answer
To use PostalForm for a paper Form 1040, upload the prepared return and printable supporting pages, then enter a delivery address for the taxpayer or authorized signer. PostalForm sends the printed kit to that signer—not to an IRS processing center.
When it arrives, the taxpayer checks the packet, adds original handwritten signatures and dates, inserts any physical items required by the current Form 1040 instructions, confirms the correct IRS filing address, and places the final packet in the mail.
Why PostalForm does not send the return directly
Printing a PDF reproduces whatever appears in that file. It does not turn a captured or scanned signature into a fresh original signature on the new paper copy. IRS processing guidance requires an original taxpayer signature on an individual paper return, and separate IRS guidance tells processing staff not to treat photocopied signatures as valid originals, subject to limited IRS-specific exceptions.
- IRS IRM 3.12.2: individual paper-return signature requirements
- IRS IRM 3.14.1: signature review procedures
The print-and-sign model keeps the original-signature step with the taxpayer. It also lets the taxpayer add a check or other physical enclosure that cannot be included in a remote PDF printing process.
Form 1040 print-kit checklist
Upload the paper-filing copy produced by your tax software or preparer—not merely the first two pages and not a bundle of every taxpayer, preparer, and worksheet copy.
- The correct tax-year Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
- All schedules, forms, statements, and printable attachments required for the return.
- Signature areas that remain available for the taxpayer and spouse, when applicable, to sign the delivered paper.
- Wage or withholding-document copies when the current instructions require them in the filing packet.
- A payment voucher when applicable, without treating a printed image of a check as payment.
- No duplicate worksheets, preparation notes, or record copies that should stay with the taxpayer.
PostalForm does not decide which schedules apply or review the return for completeness. Resolve those questions with the official instructions, tax software, return preparer, or another qualified professional before ordering the kit.
Where the kit goes—and where the final return goes
There are two different addresses in this process:
| Address | Who determines it | What is sent there |
|---|---|---|
| Taxpayer or signer delivery address | The person ordering the print kit | The unsigned or ready-to-sign printed return from PostalForm |
| Final IRS filing address | The taxpayer using current official filing instructions | The hand-signed and fully assembled paper return |
Do not enter an IRS filing address as the kit-delivery address. PostalForm's tax-return workflow only delivers to the taxpayer or authorized signer.
For the final mailing, the correct IRS destination can vary by return type, state or territory, whether payment is enclosed, tax year, and special filing circumstances. A notice-specific address can also override a general filing table. The taxpayer must verify the destination on IRS.gov immediately before mailing.
What the taxpayer does after delivery
Treat the delivered pages as a print kit, not as a filed return.
- Compare the paper packet with the prepared PDF and check every page for legibility and order.
- Hand-sign and date the return in each required place. A joint return generally requires both taxpayers’ signatures.
- Add physical Forms W-2, checks, money orders, original documents, or other enclosures when the current instructions require them.
- Confirm the current IRS address for the exact filing circumstances.
- Choose the final mailing method and personally mail the assembled packet.
- Keep a copy of the signed return and the mailing record obtained for the final IRS shipment.
PostalForm's delivery record only concerns the kit sent to the signer. It is not evidence that the signer later mailed the return or that the IRS received or processed it.
When not to use this workflow
Use another path if the return still needs preparation, the taxpayer cannot receive and hand-sign the printed pages, electronic filing is required, or the applicable instructions specify a different submission method.
For an amended individual return, follow the current Form 1040-X instructions. For a nonresident individual return, see the dedicated Form 1040-NR print-and-sign guide.

FAQs
- Can PostalForm file Form 1040 online with the IRS?
- No. PostalForm prints and sends the kit to the taxpayer or authorized signer. The taxpayer performs the final paper filing.
- Will PostalForm send my Form 1040 straight to the IRS?
- No. The workflow never uses an IRS address as its delivery destination.
- Why must I sign after the kit arrives?
- The new physical copy needs the original signature required for the paper filing. A reproduced signature in the uploaded PDF should not be treated as a new original signature.
- What if I am filing jointly?
- Review the current Form 1040 instructions. Both taxpayers generally need to sign the paper return before it is mailed.
- Can PostalForm include my tax payment?
- No. The signer must add any required check or money order after delivery, or use an authorized electronic payment method under IRS instructions.
- Can PostalForm choose the IRS address?
- No. The taxpayer must verify the current address for the form, state, payment status, tax year, and special circumstances.
- Does kit delivery prove I filed the return?
- No. It only proves the printed pages were delivered to the signer. Final mailing and any proof of it are the signer’s responsibility.
- Does PostalForm prepare or review Form 1040?
- No. Upload a paper-filing copy prepared through tax software or a qualified professional.
