Reproducible cost study
Certified Mail cost worksheet: Q4 2026
This PostalForm analysis separates postal fees from printing, supplies, travel, and time. It is a reproducible scenario model, not a survey of customer expenses or a measurement of Post Office waiting times. Version 1.0 uses official rates checked October 15, 2026.

What does a Certified letter with electronic receipt cost at USPS?
PostalForm's October 2026 worksheet calculates $9.28 in USPS fees for a qualifying one-ounce stamped domestic letter with Certified Mail and Electronic Return Receipt: $0.82 postage, $5.55 Certified, and $2.91 receipt. That postal-fee subtotal excludes printing, an envelope, travel, and the sender's time, which vary by situation.
Postal fees before supplies or travel
| Qualifying one-ounce domestic stamped letter | Postage | Certified fee | Receipt fee | Postal-fee subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary First-Class | $0.82 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $0.82 |
| Certified without Return Receipt | $0.82 | $5.55 | $0.00 | $6.37 |
| Certified with Electronic Return Receipt | $0.82 | $5.55 | $2.91 | $9.28 |
| Certified with hardcopy Return Receipt | $0.82 | $5.55 | $4.65 | $11.02 |

Additional weight, nonmachinable characteristics, flats, restricted delivery, and other services change the price. USPS explains the distinction between tracking and receipt records on its extra-services page.
Travel sensitivity, with assumptions visible
For illustration only, this worksheet values driving at $0.76 per mile, the IRS optional business mileage rate for July through December 2026. The rate includes more than fuel and is used here as a comparison proxy. It is not an observed cash expense, a required charge, or a statement that a personal mailing trip is tax-deductible. IRS standard mileage rates.
| Scenario | Assumed round-trip miles | Driving-cost proxy | Certified + electronic receipt fees | Combined modeled amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No incremental driving | 0 | $0.00 | $9.28 | $9.28 |
| Illustrative short trip | 4 | $3.04 | $9.28 | $12.32 |
| Illustrative eight-mile trip | 8 | $6.08 | $9.28 | $15.36 |
| Illustrative twelve-mile trip | 12 | $9.12 | $9.28 | $18.40 |
None of these distances is a measured average. A combined errand, walking route, or existing pickup arrangement can make incremental driving zero. Printing, envelopes, parking, and time are omitted from the table because there is no universal value for them. The earlier 2026 rate was $0.725 per mile; applying it to an October scenario would use the wrong rate period.
Reproduce a scenario
Use this equation with your own inputs:
modeled DIY cost = applicable postal fees
+ actual printing and envelope expense
+ incremental round-trip miles × chosen cost per mile
+ parking or transit expense
+ minutes spent ÷ 60 × chosen hourly value
Keep actual out-of-pocket amounts separate from modeled opportunity cost. Set time or travel to zero when no incremental cost applies. Do not mix a hardcopy receipt with an electronic receipt in a like-for-like comparison.
Compare a full print-and-mail service
PostalForm's current pricing matrix separately explains printing, address-sheet behavior, mailing and proof add-ons. Use the exact checkout quote for the same document, destination and receipt option. A service total and a stamp-only price cover different work; neither proves that one route is cheaper for every sender.
| Choose a route | Use when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare and mail yourself | You already have the document, supplies and a convenient handoff | Weight, correct service, receipt choice, and any incremental trip |
| Online print and mail | You need printing, envelope preparation and mailing handled remotely | Complete quote, preview, actual service, and preparation plus transit time |
