When you're abroad and need to mail something to the U.S., the sender/return address is often the confusing part. Here is a simple way to choose one that will not cause delays or lost mail.

When an overseas return address makes sense
Sometimes a recipient wants your current international address for their records. If you use an overseas address:
- Confirm the recipient accepts it as the return address.
- Expect returned mail (if any) to take longer and be harder to retrieve.
Avoid delays
- Match the address format the recipient expects (unit/suite/apt included).
- Do not guess the recipient's department address - use the address on the notice or instructions.
- Put key identifiers on a cover note (account number, student ID, claim number, etc.).
