What to use as the return address when you're studying abroad

When you're abroad and need to mail something to the U.S., the sender/return address is often the confusing part. Here is a simple way to choose one that will not cause delays or lost mail.

Quick answer

Use a return address where you can reliably receive mail if the letter is returned - often a stable U.S. address (family, trusted friend, or a permanent home address).

Good return address options

  • Permanent U.S. home address - Simple and reliable for returns.
  • Trusted friend/family address - Helpful if you move often while abroad.
  • A stable address you control - Somewhere you can receive mail in case of a return.

When an overseas return address makes sense

Sometimes a recipient wants your current international address for their records. If you use an overseas address:

  • Confirm the recipient accepts it as the return address.
  • Expect returned mail (if any) to take longer and be harder to retrieve.

Avoid delays

  • Match the address format the recipient expects (unit/suite/apt included).
  • Do not guess the recipient's department address - use the address on the notice or instructions.
  • Put key identifiers on a cover note (account number, student ID, claim number, etc.).

How it works with PostalForm

  1. Upload your PDF - Letter, form, or packet.
  2. Enter sender + recipient addresses - The sender address is used as the return address on the envelope.
  3. Checkout - We print and mail it to the U.S. address you provided.

FAQs

Do I have to use my overseas address as the return address?
Not usually. Many people use a stable U.S. address so returns are recoverable.
Can I send to a U.S. address while I'm abroad?
Yes. You can place an order from anywhere, as long as the destination address is in the U.S.
What if I do not know my address yet because I'm moving?
Prepare your PDF now, then send once you have a stable return address and the correct recipient address.
