How many pages can you mail with one stamp?

One current USPS First-Class Mail Forever stamp covers a standard 1-ounce domestic letter. USPS says that is about 4 sheets of regular 8.5 x 11 inch paper in a rectangular business envelope. That is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee, because paper weight, envelope type, inserts, and shape can change the postage.

Quick answer

For a normal U.S. letter in a standard rectangular envelope, one Forever stamp usually covers about four sheets of regular printer paper. If you use heavy paper, a thicker envelope, a return envelope, cards, photos, labels, staples, or more pages, weigh the sealed envelope before mailing.

What you are mailing Is one stamp likely enough? What to check
1-4 regular sheets in a No. 10 envelope Usually yes The sealed envelope must be 1 oz or less and standard-shaped.
5+ regular sheets Maybe not Weigh it; it may need additional-ounce postage.
Heavy paper, cardstock, photos, or inserts Maybe not Weight and thickness can push the letter over 1 oz.
Large unfolded pages in a 9 x 12 envelope No, not as a regular letter Large envelopes or flats start at a higher USPS price.
Square, rigid, lumpy, clasped, or vertical envelope No, not as a simple one-stamp letter USPS may add the nonmachinable surcharge or price it differently.

One-stamp page estimate

This table is a practical estimate for regular 20 lb copy paper in a standard business envelope. Weigh the sealed envelope if the mailing matters.

Regular 8.5 x 11 pages Likely USPS category Practical postage answer
1 page Standard letter, usually under 1 oz One Forever stamp is usually enough.
2 pages Standard letter, usually under 1 oz One Forever stamp is usually enough.
3 pages Standard letter, usually under 1 oz One Forever stamp is usually enough.
4 pages USPS rule-of-thumb limit for 1 oz One Forever stamp is often enough, but weigh important mail.
5-8 pages Often over 1 oz depending on paper/envelope Add postage or weigh it first.
9+ pages More likely over 2 oz or too thick Weigh it, check shape, and consider flats or online mailing.

USPS postage for heavier letters

For standard rectangular domestic letters, USPS prices by ounce up to 3.5 ounces. As of May 31, 2026:

Letter weight Postage-only cost
Up to 1 oz $0.78
Over 1 oz up to 2 oz $1.07
Over 2 oz up to 3 oz $1.36
Over 3 oz up to 3.5 oz $1.65

If the envelope is square, rigid, lumpy, vertical, clasped, string-tied, button-closed, or otherwise nonmachinable, USPS lists a $0.49 surcharge. If it is too large or too thick for letter pricing, it may be priced as a flat or package.

Why page count alone can be wrong

Page count is only a shortcut. USPS prices the finished mailpiece, not just the document.

Variable Why it changes postage
Paper weight Resume paper, legal paper, and color inserts can weigh more than ordinary copy paper.
Envelope A thicker envelope can push the total over 1 oz.
Attachments Return envelopes, cards, photos, labels, or extra forms add weight and thickness.
Shape Square, rigid, lumpy, or vertical envelopes can be nonmachinable.
Fold Unfolded pages in a large envelope use flat pricing, not ordinary letter pricing.
Proof Certified Mail, Return Receipt, or other proof services cost extra.

Stamp math vs online mailing

One-stamp math is useful when you already have the printed pages, envelope, and time to mail it yourself. It does not include printing, envelope prep, address review, proof options, or the trip to a mailbox or Post Office.

PostalForm is for the full online mailing job: upload or write the letter, review the PDF, enter addresses, see the price, and let PostalForm print, envelope, post, and mail it. In PostalForm's 2026 aggregate order data, the median document length was 2 pages and 83.6% of paid orders were 1-5 pages. See PostalForm online mailing data for the full aggregate.
