How long to give in a demand letter
There is no one-size-fits-all deadline. Many people choose 7, 10, 14, or 15 days, but your contract or state rules may require a specific timeframe. This page is informational only and does not provide legal advice.

Common timelines (general guidance)
- 7 days - Use when the balance is small and you have already sent reminders.
- 10-14 days - Common for most business invoices.
- 15 days or more - Useful when invoices are complex or multiple parties are involved.
Factors to consider
- Any deadline required by contract terms.
- State-specific notice requirements (if applicable).
- How long mail delivery may take.
- Whether attachments or dispute review is needed.
Mailing tip
If the deadline is close, consider Express (1-3 business days). If you need proof of delivery, use Certified Mail with electronic return receipt (First Class only). Certified Mail is only available with First Class.
