Is there a fee for a California disabled person placard or plates?
Permanent placards, travel placards, and DP license plates have no DMV fee. A temporary placard costs $6. (DP plates still carry the vehicle's normal registration fees.)

Yes. California DMV accepts disabled person placard applications through its online Virtual Office, and at field offices. The paper REG 195 suits applicants whose provider signs a paper certification or who prefer a mailed record.
Does my doctor have to sign the form?
Usually, yes. A licensed physician, surgeon, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse-midwife can certify items 2–8 of Section 6; chiropractors may certify items 6–8; podiatrists, foot-and-ankle disabilities; optometrists or eye-specialist physicians, item 1. Exception: if you were previously issued DP plates or a permanent placard that is still on DMV record, a new certification is generally not required.
How long does it take to get the placard?
DMV says about two to four weeks after it receives the application.
Does DMV accept a printed or photocopied signature?
No. The form states only original signatures are accepted — no photocopies or faxes. Sign the printed form in ink, and have your medical provider ink-sign the Section 6 certification.
