# Closure letter after being blocked (write it first, decide later)

Being blocked ends a conversation mid-sentence, and the unsaid part is what keeps you up at night. A closure letter is where the sentence gets finished. Here is the part most guides skip: the closure comes from *writing* it. Mailing it is a separate decision, and often the optional one.

## How it works
1. **Write the whole letter** - Use the template as scaffolding; keep only true lines.
2. **Wait 48 hours** - Then decide: unsent (complete) or mailed (also complete).
3. **Export or scan to PDF** - Upload it when the answer is mail.
4. **Confirm addresses and preview** - USPS address checks, then a preview of the exact printed piece.
5. **We print and mail it First Class** - And you go live your life.

## Key takeaways
- **Write it with no plan to send it** - The letter works on you before it could ever work on them. Decide about mailing at least 48 hours later.
- **A closure letter contains no questions** - Questions request answers. Closure, by definition, does not.
- **"No response needed" must be structural, not polite** - The letter should be complete even if it is never read.
- **Final means final** - If you send it, it is the last contact. That is what makes it closure instead of a reopening bid.
- **Do not send if a boundary or order exists** - An explicit "don't contact me" or any court order overrides your need to conclude. See [when not to send anything](/relationship-letters/contact-someone-who-blocked-you).

## What a closure letter is (and is not)
It is a statement, not a correspondence. You name what the relationship was, what ended it as you understand it, what you are keeping, and what you are putting down — and you wish them well. It is not a rebuttal, a case file, an apology tour, or bait for a reply. If what you actually want is the relationship back, you want a different letter: the [low-pressure reconnection letter](/relationship-letters/low-pressure-reconnection-letter-template) or an [apology letter](/relationship-letters/apology-letter-to-someone-who-blocked-you). Mixing closure with reconnection produces a letter that fails at both.

## Write first, decide later
Write the full letter today. Every true thing, cleanly said. Then put it away for 48 hours minimum and ask one question when you come back: *does mailing this add anything to what writing it already gave me?*

Keep it unsent when:

- The relief arrived while writing. (Common. The letter already worked.)
- Any line hopes for a reply. Reread honestly.
- They set a boundary that this letter would cross.
- You would feel worse if it went unread — because unread is the likely outcome.

Mail it when:

- It stands complete with zero response, and you can feel that.
- The silence between you is doing ongoing damage that a final, decent word would end.
- You are ready for the mailbox to stay empty afterward — and for that to be fine.

Hi [Name],

I know you've blocked my number, and I'm not writing to argue with
that. This is a last letter, not a first move — you don't need to
respond to it, and I'm not expecting you to.

Our [friendship / relationship / years together] mattered to me.
[One or two sentences of what was genuinely good — specific, not
grand.]

[One or two sentences naming the ending as you understand it, without
prosecuting it: "I know it ended badly, and I know I played a part in
that." No questions. No verdicts about them.]

I'm not writing to reopen any of it. I wanted the last words between
us to be decent ones, and mine are these: I'm grateful for the good,
I'm sorry for my share of the bad, and I genuinely wish you well.

Take care,

## What to leave out
- **Questions** - "Why did you..." and even "I hope someday you'll..." are reply-hooks. Cut them.
- **The inventory of wrongs** - A closure letter with an evidence section is a prosecution with a bow on it.
- **Conditional doors** - "If you ever change your mind..." converts closure back into waiting. Either leave the door plainly ("you know where to find me" — once, if true) or close it kindly. Not both.
- **News and updates** - What you are doing now, who you have become. It reads as a performance for an audience you are supposed to be releasing.

## Before you send (checklist)
- The 48-hour rule was honored, and the answer was still yes.
- Zero questions anywhere in the letter.
- One page.
- No order, no stated no-contact boundary, nothing lawyer-adjacent in the history.
- You have accepted the most likely outcome: no reply, ever, and closure anyway — because the closure was never in their reply. It was in your last word being a decent one.

## Mailing method
Regular USPS First Class. No Certified Mail — a signature demand at the door is the opposite of a quiet last word. Typed or handwritten both work; handwritten, scanned to a PDF, suits this letter especially well. You preview exactly what prints before paying.

## FAQs
- **Does a closure letter actually give closure?** Writing it usually does more than sending it — that is not a consolation prize, it is how these letters work. Sending adds something only when the *unsaid decent word* is the specific thing haunting you.
- **What if they reply angrily?** You are not obligated to answer. The letter was your ending; their reaction is theirs. Do not defend the letter by mail — that is the correspondence you just closed.
- **Should I tell them it's the last letter?** Yes, plainly — "this is a last letter" — and then it must be true. The sentence only has meaning if your behavior backs it.
- **Is it strange to mail a letter to someone who blocked me?** A block stops interruptions; a letter is not one. Sent once, honestly signed, with no response requested, it is the least intrusive contact that exists. Sent twice, it starts becoming intrusion — which is why there is no second letter.
- **Can I write one for someone who died or is otherwise unreachable?** Yes — that is the clearest proof these letters are for the writer. Write it fully. There is simply no mailing decision afterward.
