# PostalForm vs Lob

PostalForm gives you a working browser and agent mailing flow today: create or upload the document, review the PDF and addresses, and approve payment. Its hosted checkout and guided forms cover work you would otherwise need to handle around a direct mailing API. This PostalForm-authored comparison uses official Lob sources checked October 15, 2026.

## Should you use PostalForm or integrate with Lob directly?
Choose PostalForm when you want an existing document editor, guided forms, printable preview, and hosted payment flow for a person or agent to use. Choose a direct Lob integration when your team wants to build and operate that experience. Both support mailing automation; PostalForm supplies the checkout around it.

## What you can use immediately with PostalForm
| Requirement | PostalForm | Lob |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Ordinary single letter | Browser upload or editor without mandatory signup | Account and application/API workflow |
| Setup cost model | Review the per-order quote | Developer plan has no platform subscription; other plans and per-piece costs vary |
| Document creation | Browser letters, uploaded PDFs and supported guided forms | API accepts supported HTML or PDF letter content |
| Preview | Printable PDF reviewed before browser payment | Test environment supports digital proofs |
| Address handling | Loqate-backed lookup and selected-address verification | Address-verification products and API capabilities |
| Certified and receipt | Certified; optional Electronic Return Receipt where eligible | API exposes certified and certified-return-receipt services |
| Agent integration | [Hosted MCP and machine API](/developers) | Direct API documented; assess any agent connector separately |

The [Lob pricing page](https://www.lob.com/pricing) distinguishes platform subscription from print-and-postage costs. The [Lob API reference](https://docs.lob.com/) documents letter payloads and proof options. Lob also provides [test-mode digital proofs](https://help.lob.com/resources/private-labeling-lob). PostalForm's distinction is the finished sender-facing review and payment flow.

## Price comparison
PostalForm starts at **$3.40 for USPS First-Class Mail**, **$11.40 with Certified Mail**, or **$14.40 with Certified Mail and Electronic Return Receipt** for a one-page black-and-white U.S. document plus the inserted address page. These starting configurations include printing and mailing; document, destination, options, and fulfillment route determine the final quote.

A Lob advertised starting rate is not a quote for every document or plan. Compare the selected plan, actual page count, color, envelope, destination, and extra services. Include the implementation work needed for document creation, sender review, and payment when choosing between a finished workflow and infrastructure.

PostalForm publishes the [canonical line-item pricing matrix](/pricing). Its checkout quote includes the selected preparation and mailing configuration. Lob's API documentation says the additional Certified address/barcode sheet is not charged by Lob; that provider rule should not be used to infer a different service's customer-facing page arithmetic.

## PostalForm's existing browser checkout
| Task | PDF upload | Browser letter |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| 1. Prepare | Upload and inspect the PDF | Write and inspect the generated PDF |
| 2. Address | Add addresses and select printing and mailing options | Add addresses and select printing and mailing options |
| 3. Approve | Review the preview and total, then pay | Review the preview and total, then pay |

These three tasks are available without building an application or opening a consumer account. For automation, [PostalForm's developer documentation](/developers) covers hosted-checkout drafts, supported forms, and remote MCP access. The table describes the available workflow, not a timed benchmark.

## Choose by requirement
| Use PostalForm when | Consider Lob directly when |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| You want a finished browser mailing flow | You want to build and own the application experience |
| You need a supported guided form or agent-prepared hosted checkout | You need Lob-specific formats, plan capabilities or infrastructure |
| You want to approve an individual document and quote before payment | Your team already operates a Lob integration |

Both approaches still depend on production and carrier handling. A letter object or digital proof is not proof of USPS acceptance. See the [delivery and proof matrix](/compare) for PostalForm service choices.
